In an era where youth activism is more important than ever, young leaders across the world are stepping up to create change. One such changemaker is Tara Vishwakarthik, a 14-year-old student based in Dubai, UAE, who is making a difference in the field of mental health. Through her initiative, BraverTogether, she has created an Instagram platform dedicated to fostering a safe space where teens can openly discuss mental health, find valuable resources, and support one another. We spoke with Tara about her journey, the importance of an international perspective, and her advice for other young leaders looking to take action.
Balancing Student Life and Leadership
How does it feel to be both a student and a founder of such an initiative?
"It’s definitely a balancing act, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. As a student, I experience many of the same challenges as my peers, which keeps me connected to the struggles BraverTogether aims to address. Being a founder gives me a sense of purpose and allows me to make a meaningful impact. The journey has taught me time management, leadership, and the importance of empathy."
Encouraging Others to Take Action
What do you have to say to others wanting to take action?
"Start small but think big. If you see a problem, don’t underestimate the power of your voice or your ability to bring about change. Passion and persistence go a long way. Surround yourself with supportive people, and remember that even small steps can make a big difference over time."
The Role of an International Environment in Mental Health
What would you say an international environment is vital for, especially in terms of mental health?
"An international environment fosters diversity and inclusivity, which are crucial for mental health. It helps us understand different perspectives, promotes empathy, and reduces the stigma surrounding mental health by creating a culture of acceptance and openness. Being part of such an environment has inspired me to create BraverTogether to connect teens from all backgrounds."
A Vision for Change
If you could change anything in the world, what would it be?
"I would eliminate the stigma around mental health. It’s one of the biggest barriers preventing people from seeking help. If we normalize talking about mental health the same way we do physical health, we can create a world where everyone feels supported, heard, and valued."
Final Thoughts
Tara Vishwakarthik is a shining example of how young people can take action to address real-world issues. Through BraverTogether, she is not only fostering awareness but also building a community where teens feel seen and supported. Her journey is a testament to the power of youth-driven initiatives, proving that with passion and determination, anyone—regardless of age—can make a lasting impact. As Tara reminds us, change starts with a single step, and every voice has the power to shape the future.
